LDF: Top Ten Installations

Showstoppers Range From Grand to Intricate

Compared to the spread of projects on show for London Design Festival’s 10th anniversary, this year was a quieter affair. The V&A Museum presented some food for thought and 100% Design marked out exhibition zones with some interesting bespoke projects too.

1 28.280 by Omer Arbel at the V&A280 glass pendants from Omer Arbel’s 28 series for Bocci spilled down dramatically to greet visitors through the entrance of the V&A museum.
2 Worldscape by Atmos at 100% DesignAtmos designed this incredible contoured dinner table for 80 guests for feasts at the 2012 Olympic Games. We found it in the international pavilions hub at 100% Design.
3 The Dinner Party by Scholten & Baijings at the V&AThe Dutch duo laid a table in the Norfolk House Music Room at the V&A. Like the scene of an interrupted dinner party, parts of their collection were interspersed with cutlery, decorations and stylised food.
4 The Conductor by Studio Toogood at Established & SonsAn electrifying jumble of wires, switches, lights and metal plates with the potential for interaction.
5 Lightfalls by Todd Bracher for 3M Architectural MarketsThe intimate room of a historic artist’s studio was used to display Lightfalls, an array of lighting by Todd Bracher that makes use of reflective film to bounce light from a single LED over large surfaces.
6 Off Cut at Republic of Fritz HansenChung Tyson Architects and the Bartlett Research Fund were given free reign with offcuts of Fritz Hansen leather. Their installation puts them to use as a lightweight structure.
7 The Wind Portal by Najla El Zein at the V&AVisitors to the V&A will have heard Wind Portal before setting eyes on it. El Zein’s installation turned an arched gateway into a grid of 5,000 paper windmills that turned in the breeze with a gentle noise.
8 Endless Stair by dRMM for American Hardwood Export CouncilMore than just a spectacle aimed at the design crowd, dRMM’s Endless Stair – based at the Tate Modern – triumphed in getting regular Londoners interested in design and structure too.
9 Grado by Ron Gilad at Molteni & CThe new Grado pieces that Gilad debuted in Milan made their way to London in the form of an intriguing installation at the Shaftesbury Avenue showroom.
10 Paper Space by Studio Glowacka and Maria Fulford at 100% Design1,500 metres of looping paper strips made a striking pavilion for the international exhibitors at 100% Design.

Over 250 Robe Fixtures Purchased By Procolour For Alenjandro Fernandez World Tour

  • Pointe®
The fixtures – which include 95 of Robe’s brand new ROBIN Pointes, together with  52 x LEDWash 600s, 40 x LEDWash 300s, 12 x LEDWash 1200s, and 50 x MMX Spots – were delivered by Robe’s Mexican distributor Vari Internacional – and constitute the biggest sale yet of Robe fixtures to Mexico.
Robe’s Sales Director Harry von den Stemmen, Regional Sales Manager for Latin America Guillermo Traverso and Bram de Clerck from Benelux distributor Controllux all played key roles in making the deal happen, demonstrating great international teamwork and reinforcing the excellent service for which Robe is renowned.
Procolor’s CEO Javier Barba had been considering an investment in Robe fixtures for some time for the company’s rental stock, several demonstrations had already taken place, and both he and his technicians were very impressed with Robe’s latest technology.
They then landed the contract to supply technical production to the massive Fernandez world tour – scheduled to run for at least two years. Barba is also part of Fernandez’s production team, and had been impressed with Corthout’s work on a number of other high profile Latin American artists including Juanes, Miguel Bosé and Juan Luis Guerra, so asked him on-board to design lighting for the tour.
Alain Corthout teamed up with designer Ignace d’Haese and creative practice Arf & Yes (also from Belgium) to produce the show’s stunning visuality and develop all the different custom elements.
Very serendipitously, Corthout and d’Haese had also specified a rig containing ALL Robe moving lights following demos from Controllux!
Originally they had planned to use a competitor product, but after seeing the newly launched Pointe perform ‘in-situ’, they were convinced that this was the key fixture they needed to make the design rock.
The fact that it has a good zoom and can be a beam as well as a spot fixture with multiple possibilities … was the deciding factor.
They then replaced all the other wash lights on the rig with Robe’s LEDWashes for continuity.
Says Guillermo Traverso, “Procolor is a reference company for everyone in Mexico and not only in the lighting industry – they are making a serious statement with this purchase! It also reflects  the general growth and perception of Robe in Latin America and is the achievement of much hard work and foresight on the part of Vari Internacional”.
The 95 Pointes were delivered to automation and stage technology solutions specialist WiCreations in Belgium where they were built into a series of lighting pods which are integrated with a Kinesys motion control system.
Each Pod carries three Pointes, and a total of 30 pods – each in drops of five deep - are integrated into six moving elements which change positions constantly – up and down and cross-tracking - throughout the show.
Three of the Pointes have been modified and are used as follow spots on the show, one mounted over-stage on the truss and two at the FOH position, with the iris and colour change functions controlled from the main lighting console. All the operators have to do is point.
All the LEDWashes and MMX Spots were freighted directly to Mexico.
Robe and Vari Internacional arranged comprehensive training sessions for all of Procolor’s technicians and crew, and Robe’s Technical Support Manager Steve Eastham visited the tour’s production rehearsals in Guadalajara to ensure that everything ran like clockwork ahead of a truly amazing first gig last week at the Telmex Arena in Zapopan, Guadalajara.
José Alberto García Ramirez, Lighting Sales engineer from Vari Internacional comments, “We are all very excited and really proud that Robe is on the tour.
This will provide a worldwide showcase for the products as well as Procolor setting standards for other rental companies in the country to follow”.
Harry von den Stemmen concludes, “I am delighted that Alain and Ignace specified the Robe products and that Procolor chose to invest in them. All the lighting professionals in Mexico are now looking at this tour and it will enhance Robe’s presence enormously. Vari have done a brilliant job from the commercial aspect, in constructing the deal and shaping the package, sorting the logistics and supporting the client locally”.

Robe Helps Light Boston Strong Event

Product involved
ROBIN® 600 LEDWash
ROBIN® 1200 LEDWash

Guadalajara, Mexico based Rental company Procolor has purchased over 250 new Robe moving light fixtures that were specified by Belgian Lighting Designers Alain Corthout and Ignace d’Haese for the world tour of Mexican superstar, Alejandro Fernandez.
The event – streamed live on the internet - sold out in five minutes, and raised money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Butch was involved early on in Boston Strong’s planning and production design. He and others donated their time and creative talents for free.
The event was run festival style with quick changeovers and specially tailored sets by the artists.
The lighting equipment - including the Robe fixtures - was supplied by East Coast Lighting & Production Services, based in Warwick, Rhode Island.
It was the first time that Butch has used Robe LEDWash fixtures. He had heard a lot about them and thought that this was an ideal opportunity to try them out.
The 12 x LEDWash 1200s were rigged overhead on the stage left and right truss wings, with the 12 x LEDWash 600s positioned on the deck. The 1200s were used for providing powerful back lighting onto the artists, and the 600s on the floor for low level cross-stage side lighting.
The show was operated by Rob Koenig using a grandMA2 full size console.
Both Butch and Kevin were impressed with the zoom features and the brightness of both versions of LEDWash.
Several guest LDs were also in action for the show including Charlie ‘Cosmo’ Wilson (Aerosmith), Jesse Blevins (New Kids On The Block), Greg Maltby (Boston), Aaron Swetland (Jason Aldean), Ephraim Sosna (J Geils), Martin Favorite (Extreme) and Tom Wagstaff (James Taylor, Carol King And Jimmy Buffet).
