Lighting Designer Robert Sondergaard and HARMAN’s Martin Professional Create Unique “Reverse Collaboration” Dance Production

BURNABY, British Columbia — Unlike any dance show ever produced, Robert Sondergaard’s Reverse Collaboration project is a reversal of the typical production and creative processes—developing the lighting and environment design first and then adding in choreography as the final piece. The Reverse Collaboration concept is the culmination of MovEnt’s annual project called “Today in the Theatre” that brought choreographers and lighting designers together to explore lighting without the pressure of crafting a show. However, as Sondergaard, Owner of production design house Electric Aura, sought new ways to improve the collaboration process between lighting designers and dance choreographers, he felt the project needed to take the next step. In support of this year’s event, which featured the first ever dance show created entirely via Reverse Collaboration, HARMAN’s Martin Professional teamed up with Christie Lites to provide Sondergaard with a multitude of moving head lighting fixtures, including the MAC Quantum Wash and RUSH MH3 Beam.

Dance professionals typically start with the choreography and add layers of lighting, sound, costumes and set pieces to enhance the production. However, these additional design elements are often forced to play catch up with the choreography to become a bigger part of the show and in many cases, the lack of time or monetary resources lead to designs that are not fully realized. By developing a show through reverse collaboration, Sondergaard, as the lighting and production designer, took the lead creative role. His process began by choosing a piece of music and then designed a lighting environment, with equipment provided by Martin Professional, Christie Lites, and Electric Aura’s own fixtures, that accentuated the sound.

“From a lighting standpoint, I spent three months creating the show to ensure it was fully programmed and time coded before the collaboration with the choreographers and dancers began,” said Sondergaard. “The chance to refine a lighting design to that degree was very challenging, yet refreshing at the same time. With one four-minute section of the design featuring over 220 cue calls, it was one of the most fine-tuned designs I’ve ever accomplished.”

After months of developing the lighting design, Sondergaard then teamed up with two choreographers and four dancers at The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby, British Columbia to finalize the show over the course of six days. The first day consisted of load-in while the choreography was developed from days two through four. On day five the production team refined the performance and on day six the show was live. “It was truly an impressive feat by the choreographers to develop the routine in such a short period of time. While I had months to refine and fully program the lighting design, the choreography was only developed over three days,” said Sondergaard.

Sondergaard deployed eight of Martin’s MAC Quantum Wash lights, with six on booms upstage and two additional fixtures hung in the air for top wash. “The intensity and quality of the light the Quantum produces is unlike any other wash light available,” said Sondergaard. “It has a unique lense effect where the front lense rotates and creates an organic movement to the light like I’ve never seen in any fixture before.”

Additionally, he used 16 Martin RUSH MH3 Beam fixtures positioned on the floor on either side of the stage and four MH1 Profile fixtures hung in a cluster over center stage. Sondergaard also suspended 15 of Martin’s MAC Aura Wash lights over the stage on truss ladders. “We were very happy with the capabilities of the RUSH MH 3 fixtures,” said Sondergaard. “The strong output and colors paired with the rotating gobos really made the MH3s a fantastic fixture to work with. They really outperformed our expectations!”

From creating cutting edge and integrated lighting designs to attracting larger audiences with bigger production elements, Sondergaard’s Reverse Collaboration project hopes to create and reinforce a new creative process that showcases the importance a more refined lighting design to dance productions.

“I have always had a strong passion for dance production,” said Sondergaard. “I am proud to help bring new creative processes and production elements to the dance world and I could not have imagined our success without the support of Martin Professional.”

ADB dimming for historic DeLaMar Theatre

A modern theatre with one of the most colourful histories in the Netherlands, DeLaMar Theater in the central Leidsplein district, has had both its beautifully finished auditoriums equipped with ADB Lighting’s Twin Tech dimming technology.
DeLaMar occupies both the site of the former Nieuw De La Mar Theatre and an adjacent building, and posed one of the greatest challenges in theatre construction history.
Sandwiched between the busy Marnixstraat on one side and a canal on the other, room for maneouvre in construction and fit-out was at a premium, as building and technical teams worked around each around the clock to meet an extremely tight schedule.
The two buildings were knocked together down to basement level, leaving only parts of the historic façade, while interior was completely rebuilt to accommodate one auditorium seating 945 and a smaller theatre with 601 seats. So tight is space on site that the theatre stores much of its loose equipment, scenery and the like in an Amsterdam warehouse.
It was a labour of love for the co-founder of entertainment giant Endemol and his wife, Joop and Janine van den Ende, who created an initiative entitled the DeLaMar VandenEnde Foundation. Reflecting a long tradition of cultural entrepreneurship, the tradition dates back to 1947, when the original private theater was founded by the husband of actress Fien de la Mar. Joop van Ende had begun his career as a stagehand at the age of 17.
With a specification drawn up by leading theatre consultants Theater Advies, ADB’s unique EURODIM Twin Tech dimmers were chosen for their high performance, reliability and flexibility.
ADB’s Dutch distributor Controllux was awarded the contract and installed four Twin Tech cabinets for the main hall, each fitted with each fitted with 296 400µsec 3kW dimmers, 24 400µsec 5kW dimmers, and 40 sinewave dimmers plus twin CPUs.
For the smaller hall, a near-identical dimmer module lineup is provided in three Twin Tech cabinets, again with 400µsec earth leakage for optimum electrical noise performance and twin CPUs per cabinet. Each cabinet is configured with 200 3kW dimmers, 24 5kW and 40 sinewave dimmers. In all, the theatre is now equipped with 624 dimmers which control both house and stage lighting.
Kuno van Velzen of Controllux comments: “It was a pretty challenging install, with difficult access to both stages via a long corridor to the main stage and a crane lift to the small stage upstairs. Everyone was working to a really tight schedule so it was quite fun.”

HATHOR spreads its wings

Following the success of LIBERTY and FREEDOM consoles, ADB expands the HATHOR family with a brand new compact and lightweight USB control surface designed to be connected to a computer running HATHOR.

Dell Precision M2800 hands-on: a budget laptop for creative pros

Dell’s Precision M2800 is an attempt to get cost-conscious creatives to buy a ‘mobile workstation’ rather than a consumer or business laptop such as the company’s own Latitude line. This new 15-inch laptop is a relatively chunky beast – especially sat next to its slim-and-light cousin, the Precision M3800 or my MacBook Pro (the laptop that the M3800 was created to compete with) – but it’s a lot cheaper. We’ve yet to be told UK pricing, but in the US it starts at $1,199 (around £715).
Dell says that the key benefits of the M2800 are that it’s certified for use with pro-grade creative applications from Photoshop and After Effects to Maya – and it has the higher level of reliability and performance users get from a mobile workstation over a standard laptop.

What are the northern lights

What are the northern lights

The aurora borealis has been fascinating travellers to Norway and locals alike for generations, but what is the science behind the northern lights?
Each appearance of the northern lights is unique. Often you see three green bands across the night sky. Or the lights come as flickering curtains or rolling smoke. The colour is a luminous green, often with a hint of pink along the edge, and occasionally with a deep violet centre. The colour palette seems to come from the 1980s.
If there is a lot of activity up there, the northern lights explode for a minute or two in a corona. The next minute it is all over, and you ask yourself whether this was real or just an Arctic fata morgana.

The science behind the northern lights

But what exactly are the northern lights? It is the sun that lies behind the formation of the auroras. During large solar explosions and flares, huge quantities of particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space.
When the particles meet the Earth's magnetic shield, they are led towards a circle around the magnetic North Pole, where they interact with the upper layers of the atmosphere. The energy which is then released is the northern lights. All this happens approximatelty 100 kilometres above our heads.

Living legend

Perhaps not so surprisingly, the northern lights' spectacle has given rise to as many legends as there have been people watching. Symbols linked to the northern lights are found on the Sami shamanistic drum. The phenomenon has several different names in Sami. It is, for instance, known as Guovssahas, which means "the light which can be heard". The northern lights were traditionally associated with sound by the Sami, the indigenous people of Norway. And during the Viking Age, the northern lights were said to be the armour of the Valkyrie warrior virgins, shedding a strange flickering light.

Be patient

When dreaming about seeing the northern lights, you must remember that you are at the complete mercy of nature. The northern lights love to play hide and seek. Observing the aurora borealis is often a tug of war between your patience and the aurora itself. Stay in the northern lights area at least a week, preferably two, and you will be rewarded - unless local weather suddenly decides to obstruct your view with clouds.
See the Aurora Forecast.
